Peridot Novel Cover

Five hundred years ago, humanity went through a dark age. Art, music and creation came to almost a standstill and the world was plunged into cultural darkness. In response, the Etherium High Council, the governing body of Muse, passed a series of laws known as the Grey Laws. These laws banished creativity from the Etherium, leaving it an bland, colorless place. Without its original vibrancy, the Muses went back to inspiring the outer worlds, and for a time, there was peace.

But five hundred years is a long time to go without life, and an underground movement is stirring. The Grey Laws are inverting on themselves. The blandness is making Muses increasingly apathetic. Once again the outer worlds are in crisis. With less and less inspiration, talents are going unrealized and people are settling for "sensible" pursuits like chemistry and accounting. With the High Council too set in their ways to repeal the Grey Laws, the outlook is bleak.

One man seeks to change that. Tyrr de Melete lost everything five hundred years ago. Now he wants to right the wrongs the Grey Laws have caused. With the aid of the rising daughters of Aoide and Mneme, he rallies a band of rebels to turn the Etherium upside down and take back the creativity the High Council banished.

NaNoWriMo

Journal Entry: Mon Nov 9, 2009, 3:53 PM
As I type this, I am not writing my NaNoWriMo novel. I should be working on it, but I'm taking a short break to let my wrists rest. And by rest I mean type a DA journal. If you don't know what NaNoWriMo is, it stands for National Novel Writing Month. In November, people take on the challenge en masse to write a novel of at least 50,000 words in 30 days.

I'm just above 16,000 words now. That puts me slightly ahead of today's target word count of 15,003. My current personal goal for word count is 20k by midnight Tuesday and 25k by midnight Friday. Modest goals that I can work with.

And so I'm writing a novel. Because I can. Because it's an amazing experience and I love watching my characters come to life on the page even with all the typos and continuity errors that come with speed writing and never going back to edit, not even for spelling (unless it's so out in left field it's discernible). I always want to know what happens next. If you'd like to check out an excerpt from my novel (spellchecked for your convenience) or find out more about NaNo, visit: [link]

I believe in potluck Christmases with more family than I can count, talking and laughing together;
the serenity of an old magnolia by the river;
the magic of cardboard boxes built into playhouses and rocket ships and ancient Egyptian tombs;
the sense of camaraderie a blanket fort brings, especially when big brother thinks it's dopey and childish but hangs around anyway in hopes of being invited to join in the fun;
the joy of shopping with friends and trying to best each other with thrift-store finds; seven hour car trips just to hear a few friends sing; attending conventions in costume just to see people smile and lending my letter jacket to my little sister so she can be cool, too.

But I'm not above blackmailing a friend into signing out of his stupid MMO to talk to me for a few minutes.

I believe in romance, even if I can't express it in words.
I believe in the dreams of every kitten that wants to one day be a lion, or a tiger, or a panther.
I believe in long Sunday drives; gifts that are "just because"; leaving Homecoming early to build a death violin; cracking open a nice, cold can of Coke on a hot summer day.

And I believe in following distant music back to its source, sitting down to lunch with the musicians and joining in on the joy of making music together.

Why yes, I do have curly hair. I find that I have too much personality for straight hair. After all, what can you do with flat, lifeless locks? Nothing. Curls, however, have limitless possibility. I believe in the limitless.
